There has never been a better time than now to find a remote job. The share of remote jobs increased 12% in 2021 compared to 2020 according to FlexJobs, a membership service for job seekers with a database of nearly 57,000 companies.
The bulk of telecommuting jobs are generally customer service or sales marketing jobs, which can be done quite easily through telecommuting. But as companies expand work-from-home policies and, in some cases, adopt permanent policies, they’re seeing what other parts of their remote workforce can thrive on.
Brie Reynolds, director of career services at FlexJobs, says the biggest increase in remote listings is in HR and recruitment positions. There is a great need to hire HR workers who can hire other employees during the record turnover of a great resignation.
Allowing HR employees to work remotely means companies can hire them faster, they can expand their candidate beyond their usual geography and can be a good sign that they have invested in the future of remote work (it is better to understand the needs of a remote worker from a resource business partner humans at a distance?).
The second fastest growing area for remote listing on FlexJobs is accounting and finance jobs. Reynolds says this suggests that companies need more people to navigate ever-changing budgets under stress in the pandemic recovery. Many companies have to put in more money to hire and keep employees — all while keeping up with growing consumer demand for goods and services.
Not all remote jobs today are concentrated in entry-level jobs. According to the FlexJobs database, 11% of remote jobs are for beginners, 60% require mid-level experience, 20% are manager-level and 9% are for senior leaders.
“Business is changing at a rapid rate and they are trying to hire people to predict what will happen in the future, and how to plan accordingly,” Reynolds says.
